– the awakened one within us all
When we speak of the Buddha in the Plum Village tradition, we are not only speaking of the historical Siddhartha Gautama who lived more than 2,500 years ago. We speak of the energy of awakening that exists within each of us – the capacity to see clearly, to love deeply, and to act with understanding.
Thich Nhat Hanh teaches that the Buddha is not a god, but a human being who discovered the path of freedom and peace within himself. This path – the Dharma – is not something distant; it reveals itself in every moment, when we return to our breath, our steps, and our deep presence.
To take refuge in the Buddha does not mean to worship an external figure, but to turn toward our own capacity for awakening. When we breaathe mindfully, when we listen with an open heart, when we act without hatred – the Buddha manifests within us.
In Plum Village, people often say:
“The next Buddha may be a community”
Thich Nhat Hanh
This means that enlightenment is not an individual achievement, but something that grows in relationship – in our ability to bring peace to ourselves and to the world around us.
To honor the Buddha is therefore to honor the living possibility of awakening in each moment.
When we smile with kindness, walk with awareness, and speak with truth, the Buddha continues to live – here and now.
